The rules of Stolen Girlfriends Club: a youthful rebellious spirit, a healthy sense of humour, and the ability to entertain and empower.
The Brand
The boutique brand was founded in 2005 by friends Dan Gosling, Luke Harwood & Marc Moore - a New Zealand based trio who had a background in surfing. Armed with no formal design training they set out to design clothes that they couldn't find, but wanted to wear - initially designing for themselves and their friends. Established as an art project in 2005, Stolen Girlfriends Club was intended as an umbrella name to cover different creative projects. Exhibitions, installations, parties, films and collaborations were soon followed by their foray into the fashion world.
The backbone of the early stages was the printed t-shirt, with one design quickly becoming a cult item - the "Stolen Girlfriends Club Say's Relax" t-shirt, which summed up the brands humour & attitude early on. They quickly progressed from slogan tees, and today the brand consists of three categories - T-shirting and denim, jewellery and seasonal fashion collections for both men and women. Their garments are represented with sex appeal, confidence and courage. Whether inspired by punk romanticism, party crashers, or post-apocalyptic surfers, each collection has an underlying feeling of rock’n’roll delinquency.
Stolen Girlfriends Club is now stocked in over 13 countries around the world, positioned in mid to high end boutiques & has a strong following internationally among many of the world’s most well known in the fields of fashion, music and the arts. They continue to work on a variety of creative collaborations and projects, which has helped cement Stolen Girlfriends Club as one of New Zealand fashion’s most intriguing brands.
The Jewellery
Jewellery has been a consistent component to the Stolen Girlfriends Club brand since the beginning in 2005. Some of their original designs such as the Death Metal Bracelet, Baby Don't Go Pendant and Square Ring Set are still some of todays most popular pieces. Their drive to create jewellery was the same as that which encouraged them into the world of fashion clothing. "Back then fashion jewellery was nowhere as common as it now and that’s why we were inspired to do jewellery, just to make stuff we want to wear or couldn't get hold of."
As with their clothing lines their jewellery has continued to evolve, culminating in the launch of their Heavy Metal line in 2010 that embraces the spirit of the heavy metal of the '80's with its use of such imagery as skulls, hearts, roses and barbed wire. Although the Heavy Metal line stands alone as its own category, there is definitely a cohesive link with the fashion clothing line through consistent representation of the brands "feeling". The person who is wearing Stolen Girlfriends Club fashion could quite happily also wear their jewellery.
The boys state that they design for the same customer and the jewellery is a nice way to complete an outfit or look. "Generally like everything we do, it’s just what we feel like wearing at the time- that’s what we create. No rules are the best rules."
