Selecting an engagement ring

Selecting an engagement ring should be one of the most enjoyable things that you do so try not to focus too much on the science of it, although there are some things that you should be aware of along the way so that you can be sure you have made the right decision. At the end of the day this is a ring for life and should meet the following criteria:

You should absolutely love it!
It should be practical & comfortable and suite your lifestyle
It should hold any gemstones in securely
Subject to normal maintenance it should comfortably stand up to everyday wear

Not all engagement rings are created equal!

In today's competitive world you may see many examples of engagement rings that appear cheaper than others. Whilst this may well be the case in some situations it is not always as simple as it seems. There are a number of reasons that a ring might appear less expensive than another that looks similar and its important to remember that the jewellery trade is like most other industries - if you are comparing "apples with apples" as a general rule you will "get what you pay for".

Some of the ways a particular engagement ring may look less expensive than another are:

Diamond quality, particularly the "make" of the stone can have a big effect on value.
Manufacturing process. Rings can be hand-made, cast and hand assembled from multiple pieces, or they can simply be made in one piece and then "made to look the same" as an assembled ring.
Weight of the metal in the setting or band of the ring. With metal prices as they are it does not take much "shaving-off" of metal content to make a ring appear less expensive. Often cheaper rings have bands that are hollowed out underneath, yet look the same from above.
Many ring mounts are imported now and a number (not all) are of inferior construction yet look fantastic when new.

It is important when selecting your engagement ring that you find someone that you trust dealing with. You need to establish a relationship with someone that has the experience, knowledge and expertise to make sure that the ring you choose for your special day is going to last a lifetime.
