Remodelling your own pieces

One of the nicest things about your jewellery is that it is totally recyclable. Just like that outfit or shoes you were wearing 20 years ago, so you may tire of your jewellery's style. But just because it's now out of fashion, or you've just "gone off it" doesn't mean you have to leave it in a drawer never to be worn again. At Charlton Jewellers we have a full jewellery remodelling service, where we can take just about anything that you have - be it a gold bracelet, a diamond ring or some other piece of jewellery, and bring it back to life by turning it into a new fashionable piece of jewellery that you can love all over again!

We can work with most types of jewellery so please bring it in and lets have a chat about it. We will advise you what you can and cant do and give you an indication of what it will cost to do. We can't of course answer the question "is it worth it?" - that can only be answered by you. That special piece you were given by someone who's no longer with you, or that birthday gift from a friend may not have much financial value, but we're sure they mean the world to you. Remodelling that piece may just be the way that you retain the original connection and meaning, whilst at the same time creating a new piece of jewellery that you can begin to enjoy wearing again.

Due to advances in technology there are a couple of ways we can re-model your jewellery. We can in many cases melt your metal down, and hand make your new piece of jewellery using your original stones. Or we can use your stones, trading in your metal (in some cases it is not feasable to use the original metal) and make your new piece either by hand, or by using Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology to create a 3D design. In all cases we will discuss with you which process we feel is the best and why as, like most things, each has their pro's and cons.

The process of remodelling jewellery is basically the same as designing your own ring.
  1. An initial meeting with our store manager and designer Phil Tomkinson, who will look very carefully at your existing piece(s), then discuss your design ideas, advise exactly what can and can't be done and explain how the process works. This is an extremely important stage where we listen very carefully so that we have a good understanding of what you are looking to achieve before we put pen to paper.
  2. We would normally then proceed to do a preliminary sketch idea, and we may obtain any extra diamonds or other stones (if we are going to need any) for your new piece. This typically can take anything from a few days to sometimes a week or so, depending on the complexity of the design.
  3. Now you are ready to view your thoughts on paper to make sure we have interpreted them correctly and to make any final suggestions or "tweaks" to refine the design.
  4. Depending on what system we are using for your new piece of jewellery we would proceed from here either to creating the CAD drawing, or our jeweller Shayne would begin the process of making your design by hand. If we are using CAD you will have another visit to see the finished image before the piece is made, otherwise at your next visit...
  5. Your beautiful remodelled piece of jewellery is ready!
The whole procedure can take from anything around a week but typically would be 2-3 weeks, once again depending on how complex it is.

It is important to remember that whilst it may be a little scary precious jewellery piece re-modelled without seeing it we make you this very solemn promise - you will leave 100% happy. We will never allow you to accept a new piece that you don't absolutely love; if something is not right, quite simply we will put it right. So take the plunge, it really is something that we enjoy immensely and we know you will find it very rewarding.
