Designing your own ring

One of the most exciting ways to get the ring you really want is to have your new ring custom designed and manufactured. There is already a beautiful collection of diamond & coloured gemstone rings available "off the shelf" from reputable manufacturers as well as those we manufacture ourselves so you might ask, why bother?

Its really about just wanting something that little bit more unique. However it's not a process for everyone - you of course are not going to be able to try your ring on before it is finished. But one of the nicest parts about it is that you have a hand in the design of your new ring from start to finish - you are in reality the most important part of the process. At Charlton Jewellers we have offered this service for many years. We have a fully equipped manufacturing jewellery workshop on-site and Shayne, our jeweller has been in the trade now for 30 years, the last 20 having been with us.

Advances in technology have meant for many (but not all) designs we make, the process is slightly different now. Much design work is done through Computer Aided Design (CAD) software much in the same way that the engineering and architectural industries create their design work. This has enabled the jeweller to achieve some design attributes and accuracies that have been all but impossible up till now. Whether we use the CAD process or hand-make your ring is up to you, but we will advise you which system of manufacture we feel most suits your design. Like many things, both ways have their pros and cons.

The process of custom design with us generally works like this:

An initial meeting with our store manager and designer Phil Tomkinson who will discuss with you aspects of the style of ring you are looking for and explain how it all works. This is an extremely important stage where we listen very carefully to your thoughts and ideas so that we have a good understanding of what you are looking to achieve before we put pen to paper.
We would normally then proceed to do a preliminary sketch idea, and we may obtain any diamonds or other stones that we are going to need for your ring. This typically can take anything from a few days to sometimes a week or so, depending on the complexity of the concept.
Now you are ready to view your thoughts on paper to make sure we have interpreted them correctly and to make any final suggestions or "tweaks" to refine the design.
Depending on what system we are using for your new ring we would proceed from here either to creating the CAD drawing, or our jeweller Shayne would begin the process of making your ring by hand. If we are using CAD you will have another visit to see the finished image before the ring is made, otherwise at your next visit...

The whole procedure can take from anything around a week to more typically would be 2-3 weeks, once again depending on how complex it is.

It is important to remember that whilst it may be a little scary having your new engagement ring made without seeing it we make you this very solemn promise - you will leave 100% happy. We will never allow you to accept a new ring that you don't absolutely love; if something is not right, quite simply we will put it right. So take the plunge, it really is something that we enjoy immensely and we know you will find it very rewarding.
